To see how Youtube is now counting views, I did some testing using a video
that had 301+ views but was not currently being viewed by anyone else as
that could affect the test results. You have to use a video that has over
300 views as Youtube does not start filtering until then.
I watched the test video in batches of 10. Watching a 5 minute video 10
times all the way to the end takes about an hour. Watching another video
in-between those 10 viewings could take almost two hours. .After 10 or 20
viewings, I then waited for the view count to change. This usually took 3
to 4 hours and in some cases up to 5 hours. So testing requires a lot of
time and meticulous record keeping. After about two weeks of testing, here
are my results:

Several factors affect whether your view gets counted or not. There is no
single factor that guarantees your view will get counted. It is a
combination of factors that increases your chance of getting your view
counted. While not 100% guaranteed, some tactics have a high probability
of getting your view counted (like 90-95%).

The factors which affect your view being counted the most are:
1. Time interval between watching the same video.
2. Using different IP addresses to watch a video.
3. Clearing your browser cache/cookies after several viewings
4. Watching the video as much as possible.

Factors that do not affect whether your view gets counted or not are:
1. Video quality. You can watch it in 240 or 1080. Does not matter.
2. Being logged in with your Youtube account or not. Again doesn’t matter
3. Using Refresh, Replay or Searching or using Bookmarks. All work the
same.
4. Volume level. I tested on a computer that didn’t even have a sound
card.

In my testing, I found the single biggest factor affecting whether your
view gets counted or not is waiting a certain amount of time before
watching the video again. This delay or “cooling off” period seems to be
designed to stop repeated viewings by playlists, bots, automated tasks or
just dedicated fans who watch a video over and over again for hours. This
limits the number of views per hour per person.
