I feel like the chorus is not actually a chorus.. It has a ‘bridge’ kind of
feel to it. I need catchier chorus like twinkle :’(
The song was just so lackluster for me, like what happened? It felt like
they were trying to do too many things to make it “stand out” but in the
end it fell flat.. I really wanted to like this song..
Yes I noticed about seohyun’s doubling too especially in their 3rd japanese
album
Who is your #1 favorite kpop singer
Twinkle was better album. Cant hit a home run at every bat. I wish they
could…..
Yeah it’s not a super awesome song. I think the chorus could have been
better. I’ve been jamming to it though and I think it gets better after a
few plays. I really like the song from the bridge though! and I think it’s
interesting that it comes in like halfway through the song. Apparently it’s
actually a cover of a japanese artist from like 2009 so no wonder it sounds
a bit outdated to me. The MV is beautiful though! Also Adrenaline and
Whisper on the album are really good. Actually the mini as a whole is nice!
I see other people are saying this too, but you put into words exactly what
was bothering me about this track. It’s like the producer didn’t know how
to work with Taeyeon’s voice when she wasn’t belting and it just sounds
really disconnected. I almost feel like just a touch more reverb on those
verses would fix the problem.
The whole album was disappointing for me..i liked twinkle way better.
Adrenaline probably the only song that i kinda of liked.
Sorry to say but you are so bias with this girl even the song is not catchy
at all!!!!!!! BTW, I hear some news that this song is cope from someone
like fx song Red Light or I think SM just bought it from someone!!!! Who
know???? :(
who’s your number 1 female bias in kpop?xD
Love your reviews, and you’re so nice to look at
You hit the main thing that was a downer. The arrangement was sub-par for
TTS. And that’s really not their fault, like you said, they ARE great.
Whoever arranged this? …well….not so much. It’s almost as if two
different people did the arranging. One for most of the song and then
someone else who actually knew what they were doing for the bridge.
I liked it but then again I don’t look to SNSD or TTS JUST for strong
music, It’s more of a total package for me and they did deliver on this. I
think they would have been better served going with Adrenaline as the lead
track rather than this one. It’s not necessarily stronger, but it has that
hook that stays in your head all day.
Anyway, I can’t say I disagree with you musically and technically, but I
was happy with what else I saw so It kinda balanced out for me.
A bit random but when’s your birthday? XD
this song is average, i like only u and whisper more, but overall i like
mv, they look very beautiful
I’ll admit I’m a little bummed out by this song – I think Twinkle set the
bar so high that my expectations were a little much. It’s still a good jam
after a few listens though and certainly not a BAD song…unlike some
others (I’m looking at you, nasty nasty).
They should have promoted only u instead!
Yours was the first channel that I came to to hear a reaction. I wish I had
your professional quality audio set up so I could hear all that you’re
hearing in this song, and I do get for the most part what you mean about
the beginning of the track. Here’s what I wrote on the SM page about this
song: “I really, really like this! At first, I wasn’t sure what to think,
but then I kept listening and realized there’s all kinds of goodness
happening in this song. It’s seriously glam. The transitions are smooth and
appropriate, even as they surprise and delight. The vocals are tight, and
the harmonies are uptown suave. I’m starting to detect a bit of a trend
from SM. In recent releases from TVXQ, SJ, and now TTS, you can hear a bit
of a nod to the music of Hollywood’s Golden Age, a touch of jazz and
black-tie class. This music probably goes above the heads of listeners who
want a more predictable and mainstream K-pop, where one girl group sounds
pretty much like every other. But this is FRESH! To the haters I say,
listen with new ears. It’s sure to grow on you.”
I’m not bothered by the repetition you speak of because to me, there’s
enough going on, especially when you get to the bridge, to make me wanna,
well…Holla! I love, for instance, the way the bridge suddenly opens up,
and for several measures, makes me feel like I’m in convertible driving the
scenic route on a summer night past a city full of glittering lights.
Magic!
Lol stop defending yourself! There’s no need to really, you praised them in
the past! There’s always going to be haters! Anyway I love the song but
honestly from the first listen I wasn’t 100% feeling it until the bridge
and everything after. It’s the better half of the song. As for the members
I’m really impressed with Seohyun, it seems to be a fandom wide thing that
she’s good at harmonies (i actually noticed this with igab) so I think
that’s why her verses are a bit more work one. Also she brings that
‘sweetness’ to every GG song IMO. Tiffany just as a perfromer brings
that…..funk(???) Idk she like that person that gets you excited??? She’s
the energy pill! Hopefully you know what I mean. Taeyeon…. I mean what
did you expect? A song is incomplete without her power vocals. You can
anticipate her notes in every song! I think they were going with song you
can just bump to. As for the dance I honestly wasn’t expecting a lot. This
subgroup is vocal focused. I like this a little better than twinkle mainly
because it’s more dance/bump friendly and I can run to it! Twinkle is a
song I would listen to when it I just want to enjoy vocal heaven haha! Who
knows you might enjoy it more once they do it live. I personally like
listening/watching live stages and performances than music videos. I can
get the full effect of their vocies more. If that makes sense. I have a
high level of love for vocals if you didn’t notice. Nice review as always
don’t stop just because someone gets tough on their corner of the internet!
I just wait for your reviews! Sorry for the paragraph of a comment!
This must be the first time I disagree with you haha. I’m so in love with
this song, it was love at first time for me. I was surprised to find I
liked it so much better than Twinkle, it has more punch to it or something?
But Twinkle the album was much better then Holler the album imo.
Also, and this annoys me so much, the choreography is so boring for my
taste. I feel like they’re trying to make TTS about minimalistic
choreographies, maybe precisely so we can focus on the vocals, which
doesn’t happen with SNSD, and that’s okay, but the choreographer forgot to
hit us with a signature step we’d remember the song by, like Twinkle has? I
can only hope they’ll make up for the lack of moving with lots of charisma
onstage, and I really really would like to see a few steps out of the
routine to grab our attention, but I doubt they’ll go as far as that.
I absolutely love your reactions and your review and I totally agree with
you. This song felt average to me, I was actually annoyed with how
repetitive “holler” was repeated throughout the track. And the two notes
you mentioned that is repeated got to me as well.
Keep up the reactions because your videos are definitely something to watch
when music’s are released. :)
It’s a reproduction of Mizrock’s “Hello Me!” (r6Mov2bDPNs)
ROFL I didnt know you were into kpop bro :D
You could say shit about my favorite group … and i wouldn’t mind at all
I jsut started to follow your channel. I like your reaction to Kpop. It’s
not just reactions but you analize the song so very interesting and I can
see the differentce from other reaction videos on youtube. And don’t worry
about your opinion! I like SNSDand other SM singers but this song is kind
of normal and it was successed but not a huge success. Thanks for your
reaction! :)
Exactly! I felt something was wrong : Taeyeon is one of the best
vocalists but here I felt like the music was out of the place with the song
I don’t know how to say it ._.
sadly Twinkle was much better but I liked whisper ,it was nice song
Thank you so much for the video cause I really felt there was something
wrong but I didn’t know how to describe it so you helped somehow XD thanks
Same with me. I just found it weird at first and start to like it from the
bridge part till the rest. I love Tiff’s rap and Taeyeon’s part after the
rap sooo much!!
Anyway, I always love your reaction ♡
Keep going!! :D
I really enjoyed your analysis man, I will definitely recommend your page
to my mates.
MRJ’s REACTION TO HOLLER BY SNSD – TTS!!!!!
was it just me or this song lacks in the low frequency department.
even the album version. it had treble mid and bass but no sub-bass
frequencies.
I’m used to f(x) jaw dropping low bass. and taemin and shinee but this
feels empty.
other then that I love love love taeyeon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Adrenaline should’ve been the title track.
Even though kpop puts or great music, companies are very specific when
choosing tracks to promote. The track they promote could be repetitive or
lackluster but if it’s upbeat or can be danced to or easy to sing along to
it will get chosen over an arguably better song that doesn’t have the same
feel as the other. Which is why alot of these hidden gems in the albums
remain hidden. Btw. i recently bought a pair of Sol over the ear
headphones. It’s not like studio speakers but it’s like a different world
than a pair of $10 skullcandies haha! I actually was partly motivated to
buy them after you said a while back about quality speakers/headphones over
some regular speakers or earphones. Thanks! Definitely worth the money
because my music sounds amazing on these :)
SNSD is my favorite group, and I definitely agree. Disappointing song, that
I really feel does not highlight their vocal talents enough. Twinkle was
way better.
I am a big fan of SNSD as well but yeah i agree with you this is not their
best song….they have some better songs than this, please make a reaction
/ review of I got a boy :)
actually, i feel the same way as you. the song to me is meh, average pop
song. maybe because the set and costumes of the MV are frickin awesome, i
expect an awesome song to go with it.
I’m almost surr that whoever “arranged” this is the same who arranged I goy
a boy. Bcz is likr a mess. Twinkle was great, the whole album. This is a
tottal downer.
Am i the only who didn’t like the chorus part?
Who is number 1 on your kpop female singer bias list? AND WHERE DOES LUNA
RANK?
Totally agree with you, this song of TTS is just an average song. I
think Adrenaline is much better and it should be the main title song. I
watched the performance of Adrenaline in the showcase and it was really
much more cooler than Holler.
I really like you being honest about the song and I 100% agree with the way
taeyeon sounded disconnected with some parts of the song… but I actually
really liked the song… its upbeat and the vocals during the bridge are
killing me… keep up the good work and I always look forward to your
reviews… p.s I wont be coming at you with pitchforks and torches…
unless you kidnap one of em… tiffany is MINE!!! (insert evil laugh)…
This, I only like after a number of repeats. Not liking it much because I
think they’re tying to combine a Western-type of pop music in it. It’s
making me feel more like of Ariana Grande’s song. It’s like they’re trying
to pattern it up with her song, Problem. There’s even a part there that’s
similar with Ariana’s. Hmmm…
I totally agree with you on this one, i was quite disappointed on first
listen i just got kinda bored with it and found it really repetitive, the
chorus also kinda annoyed me after the first time. I expected so much from
this song :/, well i guess you can’t win em’ all…
I was underwhelmed by the song and the mini album as a whole for the most
part, but when Taeyeon lets her pipes out I just forget all about the
negatives. She really owned this one by the end.
I’m a dancer, so I’ll speak for that aspect. The steps are quite basic
hiphop type grooves with a bit of feminine archetype thrown in, but SNSD
generally aren’t big hiphop dancers bar Hyoyeon, especially TTS, who are
practically all vocalists, so I understand that it can look a little
awkward for those who don’t have the grooves down pat. It’s not unbearable
to watch, but you can definitely tell these 3 are vocalists more than
dancers.
Is there such a thing as being too catchy? I believe there is. But sublime
quality as always, SM.
And I’ve learned something new! Did not know about doubling or tripling or
quadrupling. Good review.
What do you think of the album “Holler” in its whole? Good? Average? Not as
good as Twinkle by far? Or a solid album even if the title track is not as
appealing as Twinkle? Thanks for sharing!
You’re so kind. And i can’t hate you because of this -_- i think this is
“an average song” too but i like the whole album. It’s really so good for
me. And i want to say something too, uhmm, i like your reactions most ^^
Hey! I’m not an expert in music, but I felt what you said the first time I
heard it. I didn’t really love the song… Actually, I’m not a big fan of
girlbands, I just love f(x) but I’m falling with GG and Red Velvet a bit.
This is my first time seeing a TTS MV, I loved the MV but not the song. It
was good but repetitive… Felt it was musicaly like that MV you reviewed
from Nasty Nasty (Knock) but not that annoying lol
Anyways, good review! I love that you keep things real and you aren’t a
crazy fan that scream perfection to all.
Definitely agreed. Just wasnt really feeling the beat drops and the whole
song as much.
I agree that this song overall isn’t as good as twinkle, but that chorus is
REALLY catchy. Overall not as good as twinkle – I enjoyed Stay and other
songs on the album overall more. Also that brass/big band + clean thumping
bass trend in the past few years is definitely something that is good.
I think maybe your NS-10′s might have made for some worse listening
especially in the intro – I’m using a pretty basic pair of studio monitors
for home listening and that intro backing trap didn’t sound too good to me
either so it probably sounded worse on your NS10′s.
The brass vamp, while it keeps the song consistent, definitely bothered me
too, as it was too short and got repetitive far too quickly.
I do think that the doubling/tripling/quadrupling/lots of stacking is very
very characteristic of SNSD and because they layer that on with the other
members it helps bring them closer, whereas the minimal stacking on Taeyeon
and the lack of reverb (maybe it’s just me, but I hear less reverb on her
voice in the detached portions as compared to the other portions)
I’m actually a cinema person, so I’m not as good with audio as you most
likely are (I’m very impressed that you have a pair of NS-10′s, I’ve always
wanted a pair, but don’t really need them haha) What bothered me the most
was that they have this kind of Jazz Age feel going on throughout both the
music and the video (The Egyptian kitsch/Moorish style going on, with some
Spanish Baroque and Neoclassical mixed in, Egyptian-esque chord progression
on a few parts and the big band early 20th century feel to the song). The
jungle set from Red Velvet is pushing it, but still (somewhat) within the
boundaries of their theme, and all of a sudden they add in a 21st (or late
20th) century beat drop(s) and a cyberpunk/neon set straight out of a f(x)
music video at the end, with a costume set that is distinctly post 1970′s
and it just feels out of place compared to the rest of the video (and the
overall feel that TTS had previously established). I feel like if you’re
going to build a throwback pop song, keep it a throwback pop song and don’t
try to mix in a 21st part in at the end.
Criticisms aside, that “Holla” chorus is WAY too damn catchy for me.
To me i like adrenaline more than holler
